Letters for support

Dear Olga Viktorovna,
Your intention to establish a private educational institution “Suzuki Music School” deserves attention, approval and support as a social project aimed not to professionalization, but education and self-fulfillment of a child through learning how to play a musical instrument in young age, and it is unique in Russia.  Educating children from the age of 2.5, when they have maximum capacity to acquire information, to develop mental and motor abilities as well as intuition, is important and highly sought. To foster discipline, perseverance, attention concentration skills, to develop creativity, memory, sense of beauty is more effective at young age. To teach music and to involve children with disabilities into this process, to create friendlyconditions for talent development responds to the demand to reform the system of education and the necessity “to return the system of additional education into the sphere of government responsibility… Investments in education will become our key budget priorities. It is not only a preparation of manpower for our economy, but also a very important factor of social development and creation of unifying values. In this regard the importance of education is close to that of culture.” (V. Putin, 5th election programmeartricle“Justice Building. Social policy for Russia.”/ Komsomolskaya Pravda of 13 Feb 2012).

Today we may see an increased demand for the institutions for early development of children.The Suzuki method of teaching young children  to play musical instruments is more a philosophy and a practical technique than performance, and it provokes more interest in young parents.

I think that the establishment and distribution of a socially oriented system of children music education based on the Suzuki method throughout Russia will contribute to social adaptation, unveiling of inexhaustible potential of students, their talent, high moral and spirituality development.

Wish you a successful Implementation of your idea ofthe talent education by the Suzuki method.

Dear Olga Victorovna,

Today, when educational reform is underway, it is especially important to raise the issue of early pre-school education of children. As long as it is generally accepted that parenting of a child should commence from the moment of his birth, the issue of when it is time to start educating is still subject of differing views. Practice in our country demonstrates that most frequently, education process starts from the age of 6-7, less often from 4-5. However, some experts believe that the most efficient period for brain building, physical (dexterity) development, development of coordination and intuition is the age of 3, if not even 2. It is during this period when a child is familiarizing himself with mother tongue, the tongue majority of people are speaking in his immediate environment. Increasingly, parents come to understanding the importance and value of such early education. Herefrom follows high demand for musical education and musical instruments tuition for small children. In our country, such demand is only partly satisfied, and on exceptional basis. Early musical instruments tuition programs are occasional.

In this context, the void in early musical instruments tuition programs could be filled by means of setting up an educational facility to implement a Japanese Professor, Shinichi Suzuki’smethod. This method is well known in many countries, where there are schools for training small children, there is an International Academy of the Suzuki Method, there is a Talent Education Research Institute, working on the platform of this method. Suzuki used to believe that all kids are born talented, all have good intuition, and their talent needs to be developed at the very early age when a child’s perceptivity and receptibility areespecially high.

However, the purpose of this famous educator-violinist has been not to nurture a professional, but, rather,to ensure harmonious development of personality, psychoemotional sphere, socialization of a child, which is of special importance for orphan children, sole parent children, physically and mentally disabled children (Professor Suzuki used to train blind children, DS and ICP children (Down Syndrome and Infantile Cerebral Paralysis). Such early education has a beneficial effect on memory development and, by all means, creative abilities.

Shinichi Suzuki regarded his method as a philosophy and practical method rather than a performance modality, which, in our country, is represented by multiple methodologies related to musical instruments tuition for children of 6 years old preferentially, and less often, 4-5 years old. Suzuki method-based education could make good the existing deficit of facilities for early development of kids in our country.
I do support your desire to set up a Suzuki method-based music education system in Russia, and I am prepared to provide assistance in this important and necessary business of bringing up and education in a mature and harmonic way of children, citizens of our country.

On establishing a Suzuki School (early music education school) in Russia

Having reviewed the idea of establishing in Russia of a children music school, based on a Japanese violin player, Professor Shinichi Suzuki’s method, as well as the draft implementation program, I consider it worth of esteem and support.

Currently, this music education system has no equals,neither in Moscow nor in other places throughout Russia.In Russia, there are no trainers specializing on educating children from the age of 3 years old specifically (there are only solitary instances which are mostly owing to the personality of a teacher). This fact is accounted for by shortage of specific methodologies for kids training. As a rule, music schools take in kids of not less than 6 years old.

The principium of Professor Suzuki’s method is involvement of the child’s mother in educational process. In process of artistic inspection, parents become “assistants” of a school trainer, whilst the home environment contributes to maximum unlocking of child’s abilities.
Of interest is Professor Suzuki’s concept revealing interrelation between fingering and mother tongue acquisition. In Suzuki’s schools, native and musical languages are mastered in parallel.
Suzuki’s method gained currency in many countries of the world. I will refer to only few fundamental principles of Suzuki schools method:

  • musicality can be developed in every child;
  • mandatory engagement of parents, which includes their learning to play musical instruments;
  • focusing on character building and self-fulfilment, rather than on professional development;
  • development of a child’s memory;
  • development of creative abilities.

Your intention to adopt the Suzuki schools’ practice to work with children with physical disabilities (blind children, DS and ICP children) and arrange for their attendance on a free of charge basis, deserves respect.
Summing up the abovesaid, I note apparent importance of setting up Suzuki schools in Russia, and I am of the opinion that Suzuki method can be applied as a supplement to the Russian system of music education.
I am prepared to provide assistance and support in execution of your intention.
